The small munsterlander is a versatile, easy to guide and handle hunting dog. He will show you to be an eager worker. He is not afraid to work in thorny bushes or thick terrain nor is he affected or afraid to work in snow, ice and retrieves under extreme conditions out of water. The small Munsterlander is very willing to learn, is intelligent and has an outstanding memory on what he has learned. He never forgets even if seldom used for hunting. He observes his surroundings carefully and notices either by sight, smell or listening.
Good hunting, hunter and dog work in close harmony as one. Even in old age he stays active and likes to play. He will never bite or fight with other males and goes out of his way to avoid this. He likes to be praised and if you do it often, he is overwhelmed in his thanks to you. Due to his small size, he is well suited to be a house dog. He is alert on guard and is easy to house train.
He is steady in his point upon finding his game. If the games flees, he follows on command. The downed game is followed with great energy, picked up and delivered in a friendly manner - even rabbits and foxes. Very little is required in training. Going steady with him to hunt, he will learn by himself how to please the hunter and get results. German restaurant owner, August Hersline, bred and raised Small Munsterlandersas early as 1850. The first time a litter was recorded was in 1900. Today, the Small Munsterlander is the 3rd largest group of dogs in Germany. 2000 (+/-) pups are recorded in the breeding records yearly. To date, there are only about 180 Small Munsterlanders recorded with NAVHDA in total in Canada and the US. Through training, numbers of tests and very strict breeding restrictions have made him what his is today - the best small versatile hunting dog in Germany.
